This is a timelapse of my 2nd mural in aersol Arena/ East Germany- thanks again to Daniela and Jens- we had a great weekend.…
The album has a cinematic feeling. Are there any particular cinematic scores that you feel an artistic kinship with?
I was actually just talking about how much play the soundtrack from Requiem for a Dream got in my stereo in high school. Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet killed that. “Lux Aeterna” is the track. It gets a bit overplayed in movie trailers and in movie scenes that they need to feel extra epic, but that doesn’t kill it for me. Another one that got me was RZA's soundtrack to Afro Samurai. Anime has always had the same kind of scoring for years, and the refresh from a hip-hop direction really made that series.
Requiem in high school? That's heavy. Look around you. We're in the tree house of trust: Was it playing while you lost your virginity?
Haha, nah, honestly you know what was playing on the TV? Spaceballs.
Man, you are all sorts of nerd freaky. As a producer, you are very consistent in abandoning plateaus of traditional genres and somehow mixing them in some quantum leap type ish. How do you know when a track is done and ready to be shoved out of your brain nest?
It’s a matter of how it sounds, and is anything else I'm doing to it having a positive impact. If every change after a certain point is a take or leave it gesture, I call it done.
Speaking of positive impacts, “Get Dirty” did things to me. Thank you. However, I may have committed a felony while listening to that track. I am unsure, since we were crossing the Alabama-Tennessee border, and laws vary. I hope you won’t mind the publicity involved when I blame your verses. Before that happens, I suggest you release a celeb sex video to sugarcoat the impact of my sexual debauchery. Which verse from “Get Dirty” would you commit with Tom Cruise’s ex ladies? Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Katie Holmes. (Example: Verse 1 - Katie Holmes. But you can’t use that one because I already said it.)
Damn, I hope you didn’t get arrested, and if you did, feel free to say it was my fault. Assuming you're laying this out as a ‘marry, fuck, kill’ type situation…Nicole Kidman gets verse one ‘cause she's been naked on screen, so there might be a little bit of exhibitionist in there. Penelope Cruz gets verse two because she's tiny, and I know I could pick her up. And Katie Holmes gets verse three because she looks like that girl next door, take her to the crib and show her what's good in the privacy of the home type.
I have a thing for dudes with big noses and glasses, basically Shock G as humpty. Oh and lazy eyes. I fuckin’ love lazy eyes. You got any uncommon attractions, like unibrows or shelf butt?
I like real dorky girls. Like if a girl is only kind of cute, but snorts when she laughs or wears glasses or has a leg brace or braces or some other weird shit, I’m into it. Into it like Humpty was into big girls and Burger King bathrooms.
I feel like this is the beginning stages of Kid Static Geek Beauty Harem. Similar to KISS Army, but with less face paint and more accurately balanced bank accounts.
Throw some time management advice at these youngsters out there. They don’t fucking listen these days. HEY YOUNG FUCKS, THIS IS FOR YOU!
I would say, don't let anyone ever tell you something is not for you. That's something only you can decide. If you want it, go for it. But remember that there are so many out here who work hard, hustle hard, and grind hard. You have to be willing to not only meet them on that level, but to top it. If you find yourself going out, playing games, or doing things not related to your passion, remember that another dude is working and you're getting left behind.
Stay hungry. Grind hard. Got it...Just curious though, are you on that Einstein sleep pattern of 4 hours awake, 2 hours asleep? I wanna try that.
Nah, I used to get 3-4 hours a night, but now I go back and forth. I’ll get a full night, then not sleep for like two days, then crash for a night, then the next night I’ll sleep for 4 hours. Basically, my sleep schedule is hella irregular.
“Orange Crush” gave me a ghost boner. For some reason, I see Kristen Schaal doing slightly pornographic gestures while bouncing around on an orange. If you were to do a video for this song, could we make that happen? Yes, this is me asking Kristen Schaal if she will do slightly, SLIGHTLY, pornographic gestures while bouncing around on an orange in a blue sky candy realm. Thoughts?
Whoah, is that the weird page lady from 30 Rock? If you have her number, hook it up – I'll make it happen. I think that could be hilarious.
We should offer her charcuterie stuffs and tequila-pineapple cocktails. That would get me in, even if I was like, Stone Phillips famous. Who, by the way, should also be in the music video. Agree?
Wow, Stone Phillips? I haven’t heard that name in forever. Who are you, throwback girl to the Wonder Years of Dateline 2007?
Actually, throwback girl to the Wonder Years of Dateline 2005. That's the last time I owned a television. Technologically speaking, I am regressing. You should check out my laserdisc collection and arm muscles from use of my butter churn. No, really.
HEY! Which one of your musical machines could most likely be used as a spaceship, if combined with alien technology?
My Kaoss Pad 3, probably. It has those UFO-type lights on it. And that reverb setting makes me mess around like I'm in space all the time. I'm in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaace.
If David Copperfield were to leave you his secret sex island in his will, would you change the motto from “No One Can Hear You Scream!” to some other motto? (Remember, mottos have to create an air of mystery and danger in order to deter Somali pirates.)
He has one of those? Or are you just assuming that's what goes on there? I know he owns an island, but you don't really hear anything about what goes on there. Maybe because everyone who went there never came back. I would change the motto to: "A safe place for King models and popozudas."
Your island is going to be pillaged within a week, with a motto like that. You mentioned nothing about barbed wire or urethras. David Copperfield: If you are reading this, I am the rightful heir to your sex island.
“Boxing Day” is beautifully tragic and painfully real. This track was co-written with another Chicago underground artist, Panthrow Nobody. How did you meet and decide you wanted to collaborate?
Panthrow and I met up a while ago. Before he moved to New York, I would always see him around in Chicago. He was looking for artists to get on some beats he had, so he sent me some rough tracks with the intent of seeing what I would do with them. I sent him some rough mixes and we both liked how they came out, but didn't know what to do with them. A while later, I sent one of the tracks to the label when we were figuring out what was going to go on the record, and they loved it. Panthrow did the original beat maybe three years back. On the refresh, we took it into the studio and fleshed it out a bit to renew it. Not to take anything away from him – it sounds a lot like the original, but we added a lot of elements to make it sound bigger and more full, rerecorded the vocals on better mics, and re-sequenced some of the sounds.
How do you annihilate any creative or mental blocks?
Different ways; sometimes I walk away from songs and revisit a couple days later. Sometimes I'll drink some whiskey and go back to it when I'm nice and lit. Sometimes I'll smoke a little something-something. The creative process can be a cruel mistress that doesn't readily lend itself to deadlines and real world problems. Sometimes, you gotta just work your way through it by putting down something you don't really like; then going back to fix it when you come up with another option.
So, are there any "white whale" projects that you have been tweaking for years, or do you let them go if something isn't working out?
I have this dubstep album that’s been in the works for like a year and a half. All the production is done, but I’m being real picky about who I work with on it and I’m doing a lot of waiting for heads to have time to get on the tracks. But yeah, sometimes if it’s a matter of tweaking it and it doesn’t get right, I’ll let it go. Not everything works out.
You stayed with me a few SXSWs ago, and we had a bitchin’ time. You taught me how to scale a 10-foot wall so that we could get into a Brother Ali and BK One show. Later, we did some breakdancing at another show, and then you gave me a pump on a 24” BMX cruiser for about 1.8 miles. You even scored some surprise performances. How does one take the bitch out their heart and be able to enjoy life as much as you do?
Let me let you in on Kid Static's Top 5 Rules for Life:
1. Do what you want as long as you aren't hurting other people.
2. Most things won't get you arrested. If by trespassing you can have the time of your life, do it. The only thing they can do is kick you out.
3. “No” isn't a bad thing. If you ask for something and they say no, you didn't have it to begin with, so you didn't lose. You're just right back where you started.
4. Your life isn't run by other people, so don't care what other people think of it.
5. Have fun. If it's not fun anymore, stop doing it.
Follow those five rules and I guarantee your whole life will either get better, or suck. Either way, why are you asking a rapper for life advice? I do what works for me; do what works for you. It's nice outside. Come to the crib. Let’s drink beer and barbecue.
Did you just rap at me? Let’s talk about “Breaking Down.” Although your most of your catalogue is a cross-pollination of genres, I was surprised by the rock track that is “Breaking Down.” Were there particular challenges in producing this sound?
Not really; it’s about going to the right people. I had an idea for a song and I didn’t have the chops on drums to flesh it out past the rough draft. Jacob Cooper produced the initial rough track. He plays drums in a band called Wavves, so I went to him and said, ‘Hey, I want it to sound like this,’ and he did it. No questions, just skill. The engineer I worked with, Douglas Boehm, has over 200 albums of various genres (including the Pharcyde's Bizarre Ride II) and a Grammy under his belt. I said to Doug, ‘Hey, this is the sound I want,’ and he tweaked and worked with it until we both went, ‘Yeah, that's exactly what I was talking about.’ It's easy when you’ve got the right people helping out.
Sounds like you are hanging out with the right people. Do you have a person you go to for harpsichord? I think it's a lost art.
Ummm, no?
You either do or you don’t. Forget it, I know a guy. I’ll put you in touch.
A couple years ago, you were working through some creative exercises and publicly requested anyone to submit a track to you that they would like to hear remixed. This exercise yielded some ill bangers, which you posted to your blog. I like it when you keep your mind fresh like snap peas at a farmer’s market. On Sundays, you do a webcast at 2pm PST on stickam.com, and have recently had the most watched webcast there. I think a lot of artists would benefit from this type of exposure, because it puts you in touch with your fan base in a more humble light. How is this webcast enhancing your artistic brain stuffs?
Being able to directly connect with people is seriously one of the most fun parts of this thing. Besides being able to answer questions about myself and the music, I get to learn about them too. Just because I put myself out there and do something in a public light, it doesn't make me inherently better than anyone on the other side of the screen. They have things they care about and worry about, too. If we can meet halfway, share some jokes, and play some music, that's even better. One of the most fun things is when we do live looping. I'll ask them for a genre, and using my loop pedal and Kaoss Pad, we'll put together a song right there that we all helped on. Some people just watch, and others join in – it’s dope. I get good at looping, they get to participate. Good times all around.
So, you got anything up your musical wizard sleeve for the near future?
I have a 4-song EP of songs that didn’t make the record, dropping at the end of August. And before the end of the year, I want to get this collab album out that I’m working on.
You work well alone and with others, such a well rounded gent. You’re going to love harpsichord dude. He wears velvet and gives the best backrubs. Speaking of velvet:
Create your own character for Game of Thrones. Give me a brief description of said character. This must involve dragons.
Can I just be Peter Dinklage? No? Then I got nothing.
And that’s a wrap, y’all. Be sure to check out Kid Static’s website for all the latest updates and links to where you can scoop his newest album. You can find Misa’s rants and raves on her Twitter page.
